Oregon Visitor's Guide

Oregon Destinations, Season by Season

Whether you are thinking about moving to Oregon or just planning your next weekend, this guide walks the whole state: the coast, the valley, the Cascades, and the high desert. Here is what to do, when to go, and how to make the most of it.

A Local's Road Map

Everything Oregon, in One Guide

This guide is for people considering a move to Oregon and for current residents looking for the next thing to do. I'm Katcina Smith, a real estate broker with MORE Realty, and I have spent years helping families find their place between the coast and the valley. These are the places I send friends and the ones I go back to myself.

Oregon is six states in one: the public beaches of the Coast, the farms and vineyards of the Willamette Valley, the bridges and food carts of the Portland metro, the river towns of Southern Oregon, the volcanic wilds of the Cascades, and the sunny high desert of Central Oregon around Bend. Seasons change everything here, so the guide is organized the same way: by the rhythm of the year.

Oregon Coast

More than 360 miles of public beaches, headlands, lighthouses, and village harbors, from Astoria to Brookings.

Willamette Valley

The fertile I-5 corridor from Portland to Eugene: farms, vineyards, and the state's largest cities.

Portland Metro

Bridges, food carts, parks, museums, and forest on the doorstep of the ocean and the Gorge.

Southern Oregon

The Rogue River, Ashland's world-class stages, orchards, and vineyards, with Crater Lake right above.

The Cascades

Snow-capped volcanic peaks, high lakes, and trail country: the backbone of Oregon runs through here.

Central Oregon & Bend

High desert and the Deschutes River: sunnier skies, bike paths, floats, resorts, and mountain views.

The Year in Oregon

Plan Around the Season

Oregon rewards the traveler who fits the landscape to the time of year. Here is how each season works.

Wildflowers, waterfalls & the fishing opener

Spring

Wildflower blooms

Balsamroot and lupine carpet the high plateaus of the Columbia Gorge from mid-April into June. Rowena Plateau and the Tom McCall Point trail are classic viewpoints with sweeping outlooks over the river.

Waterfall hikes

Spring runoff makes every falls run full and wide. Wet years mean fog and rain in the Gorge, which only adds atmosphere; trails get slick, so good boots earn their keep.

Fishing opener

Trout season opens on many Oregon rivers and lakes in late spring, when crowds are thin and the fish are hungry. Check the current year rules from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife before you cast.

Beaches, festivals & the high country

Summer

Beach season

Coastal towns wake up in summer: Cannon Beach, Cape Kiwanda, and the little harbor towns fill with wanderers. Reserve lodging well ahead, because the waterside rooms go fast.

High-country hiking

Snow melts out of the mountain trails by late June, opening favorites like Crater Lakes rim and the high lake loops. Wildflower meadows peak at altitude all summer.

Festivals & river floats

Portland's Waterfront Blues Festival and the Oregon Country Fair anchor the calendar in July, while the Deschutes and Willamette rivers are made for afternoons on an inner tube or a gentle raft.

Autumn vineyard rows in amber and gold with crimson vine maples at the edge of the frame

Color, harvest & the first storms

Fall

Fall color

Vine maples turn flame in late September and October. The McKenzie River Highway, the foothill roads near Silver Falls, and anywhere along the Cascades fringe will treat you to color.

Wine country harvest

Crush season moves through the Willamette Valley into late October, and wine-tasting rooms are at their busiest and best. Harvest dinners and release weekends fill the calendar.

Crabbing & storm watching

Dungeness crab is a coast favorite at this time of year. And when the first big storms build, the central coast becomes the front row for rough surf at Depoe Bay, Cape Perpetua, and beyond.

Powder days, cozy coves & winter falls

Winter

Ski and snowboard

Ski season runs from roughly mid-November into April across the Cascades. Riders pick between Mt. Bachelor, the Mt. Hood resort trio, Hoodoo, Willamette Pass, and Anthony Lakes in Eastern Oregon. For the 2026-27 season, Mt. Bachelor has scheduled its opening for December 4, with Hoodoo and Mt. Hood Skibowl projected around Thanksgiving weekend; Timberline's Palmer snowfield keeps skiing going year-round when conditions allow.

Cozy coastal stays

Winter finds the coast at its quietest: stormy skies, driftwood fires, and big windows made for watching the surf. Rates drop and crowds vanish, which is exactly the point.

Winter waterfalls

Winter rain keeps the Gorge waterfalls pouring. Crowds thin after the holidays, light fades early, and cold mornings turn mist to ice along the trails. It is worth the layers.

Steam rising from a mineral hot spring pool ringed by travertine rock in a mossy Oregon forest

Hot springs, pints & small-town rhythms

Year-Round

Hot springs

Soaking is an all-seasons pleasure. Umpqua Hot Springs, on the North Umpqua side of the Cascades near Crater Lake, is best from May through September when the access road is open; check the Umpqua National Forest before you go.

Brewery hopping

Oregon has one of the great craft beer scenes in the country, with hundreds of breweries from oceanfront brewpubs to Bend taprooms. See the full Oregon Microbreweries guide in the Food & Dining section.

Small-town weekend rhythm

Farmers markets, bookstore crawls, first Fridays, and main street rituals run every single day of the year. Every region on this page has its own calendar, and they are all worth a road trip.

Ways to Play

Activities, Wherever You Roam

These are the activities that define an Oregon year, and where to point your wheels for each one.

Hiking

Beach walks to mountain ridges, trails run everywhere. Save lines: Gorge viewpoints, lake basins, the high desert, and the Wallowas.

Best: late spring through early fall

Waterfalls

The Columbia Gorge is the western waterfalls highway, and Silver Falls is a whole park of looping falls. Runoff season makes them roar.

Best: spring and winter

Skiing & snowboarding

Ski areas sit at almost every compass point: Mount Bachelor, the Mt. Hood three-mountain resorts, Hoodoo, Willamette Pass, and Anthony Lakes.

Best: midwinter, snow permitting

Fishing

Steelhead, salmon, trout, and crabbing bays. Oregon rewards a good rain jacket, a license, and patience from the deschutes to the coast.

Boating & kayaking

The Willamette and Deschutes paddle well, the North Umpqua holds deep clear pools, and the coast offers protecting bays for a first launch.

Best: summer, calm water

Camping

State parks, national forest campsites, lake bends, and desert star fields. Nights cool off even in July, so keep a warm layer.

Best: summer; reserve early

Hot springs

Developed pools and forest springs scatter along the Cascades fringe. Most call for a short hike in and quiet, respectful soaking.

Best: May through September

Windsurfing & kiteboarding

Hood River is the water sports capital of the Northwest, with steady gorge wind in summer and lessons for newcomers at the water edge.

Best: summer afternoons

Surfing

The Oregon Coast is cold water surf country: Indian Beach at Arch Cape, the Pacific City strand, and Bandon all surf well this fall.

Best: fall and winter swell

Classic Oregon

The Places That Define the State

Twelve icons of the Oregon landscape, with what makes each special, the best time to visit, and the tip you do not often find in guides.

Southern Cascades

Crater Lake National Park

Why it is special

The deepest lake in the United States sits inside a collapsed volcano, and the blue water stays cold and clear all summer. The rim drive shows it from every angle.

Best time to go

July through September is the classic season, and the full Rim Drive loop is open this fall: the most recent park update, from early October, shows both West and East Rim Drive open for through travel, with only some pullouts still closed, and the East Rim rehabilitation project largely complete. The Cleetwood Cove trail and boat tours remain suspended for the 2026 and 2027 seasons while the lakeshore is rehabilitated. October is the transition month: the park closes the West and East Rim Drive and the North Entrance Road to automobiles on November 1 or at the first heavy snowfall, whichever comes first, so check the park Current Conditions page before heading up.

Local tip

Rim Village, the lodge, and the west rim viewpoints stay open into the shoulder season. Nights get cold and snow can arrive at any time, so check the park website for current road and weather conditions before you go; when the boat tours return in a future season, book Wizard Island early, because spaces sell out weeks ahead.

Cascade foothills

Umpqua Hot Springs

Why it is special

A travertine pool cluster on the North Umpqua River near Crater Lake, reached by a short steep trail through old growth forest.

Best time to go

May through September. Forest Service orders can close access road in winter, so check current conditions.

Local tip

Carry the day-use fee or a Northwest Forest Pass, pack everything out, and keep the pools calm and quiet.

Columbia River

Columbia River Gorge

Why it is special

A river canyon cut through the volcano range, so full of waterfalls; that historic road earned its nickname:the waterfall corridor.

Best time to go

Spring for wildflowers and full falls; autumn for the light on the canyon walls.

Local tip

Driving the waterfall corridor is free of entry permits. Timed parking permits at the Multnomah Falls I-84 Exit 31 lot were required through September 7 this summer, and the permit season is now over for the year, so fall parking is reservation-free.

Columbia River Gorge

Multnomah Falls

Why it is special

Oregon tallest waterfall: a 620-foot two-tiered column just off I-84, with a chalet lodge and a footbridge at the middle.

Best time to go

Winter and spring for the wildest flow; summer for blue sky and crowds you can plan around.

Local tip

The 2026 timed parking permit season ended September 7, so fall visits need no reservation, and the trails and viewpoints stay quiet now that the summer rush has passed.

Columbia River

The Columbia River

Why it is special

The wide river that splits Oregon from Washington is a working highway and a playground: wind wins, beaches, and islands to claim for a day.

Best time to go

Spring to fall for wind sports; autumn for migrating birds and harvest stalls.

Local tip

Hook up at Hood River waterfront or the upriver parks; that is where the outfitter shops and launch ramps live.

Central Oregon

Smith Rock State Park

Why it is special

The place American sport climbing was born: red-and-buff cliffs of welded ash and tuff above the Crooked River, long rays rake the walls at sunset.

Best time to go

Spring and fall, when the climbing and hiking are cool and the light is warm.

Local tip

The river loop trail circles below the cliffs; stop at viewpoints, bring water, and watch for climbers overhead.

Southeastern Oregon

Steens Mountain

Why it is special

A long fault-block ridge rising more than a vertical mile above the high desert, with wild horses, mountain lakes, and peaks above the sage.

Best time to go

Late June to August, when the road is open, the snow is gone, and wildflowers wave across the summit.

Local tip

The Steens loop road is unpaved and seasonal, usually open mid-summer to fall. A high-clearance car is the right call.

North Coast

Cannon Beach & Haystack Rock

Why it is special

The 235-foot monolith that crowds every calendar, guarding the broad sands and tide pools of the Oregon Coast.

Best time to go

Low tide for walking, golden hour for the color.

Local tip

At low tide, the tide pools by the rock are full of sea stars. look, stay back, and leave them be.

South Coast

Bandon & the South Coast

Why it is special

Wind-carved sea stacks, driftwood beaches, and a working crab harbor make Bandon a quiet, west coast show.

Best time to go

Spring and early summer for soft light; winter brings the wild surf.

Local tip

Fish and crab docks fill by late afternoon, look at the harbor and order the freshly landed catch.

Columbia River Gorge

Hood River

Why it is special

A mountain town meets river town at the windy heart of the Gorge, with orchards, breweries, and maybe the best water views in Oregon.

Best time to go

Summer for wind and water; autumn for apples and their stands.

Local tip

First time on a board? Sign up for a beginner lesson right on the waterfront, the wind is actually the best teacher and fastest.

Central Oregon

Bend & Central Oregon

Why it is special

Sunny pioneer dirt town with its own river, by miles of bike trail, zoo zoo, and ski laps at Mount Bachelor in the winter.

Best time to go

June through September for floats and singletrack; December to April for turns.

Local tip

Summer lodging goes fast here. reserve a room, a campsite, or a river float at the same time as your trip.

Statewide

Oregon Breweries

Why it is special

Oregon doubled down on craft beer in the 1980s, and the whole state still wins: hundreds of breweries from shore to timberline.

Best time to go

Anytime. The beer calendar never closes.

Local tip

Use the Oregon Brewers Guild directory to make your own tour, and find our full tasting guide in the Food & Dining section.

Oregon Microbreweries

Oregon Runs on Hops

Oregon is one of America's great craft beer states, with hundreds of breweries from the beachfront coast to the tall taprooms of Bend. Deschutes, Pelican, pFriem, Full Sail, Boneyard, and 10 Barrel are the famous names, and a harbor alone of small producers fills the middle of the list.
